Netflix Drops Trailer for Christian Musical A Week Away
This week, Netflix released a trailer for its upcoming family-friendly musical film, A Week Away, which is set at a Christian summer camp and features music from several heavy hitters within the Christian music scene.
According to Netflix, the film tells the story of a troubled teen named Will Hawkins (Kevin Quinn) who “has a run-in with the law that puts him at an important crossroad: go to juvenile detention or attend a Christian summer camp. At first a fish-out-of-water, Will opens his heart, discovers love with a camp regular (Bailee Madison), and sense of belonging in the last place he expected to find it.”
The musical takes place in “Camp Aweegaway” named because, according to what the camp owner says in the trailer, “every once in a while, somebody’s just a week away from experiencing something that changed everything for them.”
The trailer features scenes of summer camp activities, plenty of High School Musical-esque dance moves, and scenes showing the budding relationship between Will and Avery.
A Week Away’s producer and co-writer, Alan Powell – who has been involved in the faith-based film The Reason – told The Christian Post that he felt the faith-based movie space was missing a good musical, so he set out to make one himself.
“I love musicals in general, as I’m sure you can probably speculate, loving film and loving music. Musicals are my favorite, and I just remember thinking, ‘I don’t know why there’s nothing in the faith-based space. There’s never been a musical in a faith-based space. It doesn’t make any sense to me, seeing as how music is probably, and arguably, the biggest business within the Christian culture, quite honestly.”
Despite there being only a few Christian references in the movie’s trailer, the film is expected to include music from Christian music superstars For King and Country, Amy Grant, Steven Curtis Chapman, Michael W. Smith and more.
The film is set to be released on March 26.
