Christian Ministry Calls on Churches to Remember Developing Communities on World Water Day – Elizabeth Delaney
Water is something that is definitely taken for granted by most people in developed countries. We don’t realize the blessing of being able to turn on a faucet and receive clean water right in our homes. However, about a quarter of the population around the world, 2.1 billion, don’t have access to clean, safe drinking water, according to the World Health Organization.
In the United States, when a natural disaster strikes and a community of people doesn’t have access to clean drinking water, that community is considered to be in a state of emergency. In fact, the U.S. Government has released a document that details what to do in the event that safe drinking water isn’t available.
Opportunity for Churches to Celebrate World Water Day
Christian ministry GFA World (www.gfa.org) is reaching out to churches and asking leadership and their congregations to consider joining them in a campaign beginning on March 22 as a way to celebrate World Water Day.
GFA World focuses primarily on Asia and Africa in an effort to provide water wells. For the upcoming month-long campaign, the ministry wants to be able to provide 125 new “Jesus Wells” in some of the developing communities that are in the most desperate need for clean drinking water, according to the Christian Newswire.
According to the GFA website, every well is inscribed with John 4:13 – 14: “Jesus answered and said to her: ‘Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.’”
Wells Provide Developing Communities an Improved Quality of Life
The wells cost $1600 each and are drilled up to about 650 feet, which is significantly deeper than a typical well. They provide the community with water even during a drought. Local churches care for each well, and pastors make a point of praying for anyone who needs it. The wells improve the quality of life in their communities since less time is spent attempting to find a water source, and more importantly, the clean, safe water provided by the well reduces instances of illness in families and the community as a whole.
