Pennsylvania House Representative Mike Reese Dies of Apparent Brain Aneurysm

Pennsylvania House Representative Mike Reese reportedly died on Saturday of a brain aneurysm. He was 42.

According to CBS Pittsburg, Reese, who was first elected in 2008 and had served as a Congressman ever since, was re-elected on November 3rd. The Pennsylvania Representative had served in various capacities in state government, including being the caucus secretary of the Pennsylvania House Republican Caucus in 2019-2020.

Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Kerry Benninghoff mourned the loss of her colleague and friend, writing in a statement, “More than a friend to all of us, and one of our caucus leaders, Mike was a devoted husband and father. His wife, three young children and extended family are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

She continued, “I have known Mike since he took office in 2009 and have been proud to witness his many legislative accomplishments, especially his tireless work on behalf of Pennsylvania’s students and families. Mike was a model legislator who thoughtfully put his constituents first. His spirit, presence and counsel will be sorely missed.”

Reese graduated with a degree in secondary education with a focus in history before going on to earn his master’s in business. He used his degrees to serve as a teacher at Pressley Ridge School and also work in admissions at the University of Pittsburgh at Greenburg. After this, he went on to work as the assistant director of financial administration for Westmoreland County before running for the Pennsylvania House.

While a Pennsylvania Congressman, he worked to limit state intervention in the economy and also create a more transparent government. He worked to improve charter and cyber-charter schools. He also fought against mandatory smart meters by companies that regulate the amount of electricity going into a building regardless of consumer consent. He also put forth legislation in 2018 that would provide a support system for minors whose parents are deployed on active duty.

His wife and three children live in Mount Pleasant, where Reese was born and raised.
